This tea bowl was made in my small pottery workshop that we have on the roof of our apartment in Taiwan. We can see the Yamingshan Mountains which are always a constant source of inspiration.
I used local Taiwanese clay to make this bowl.
As I was throwing this bowl, I attempted to create a chawan that would be comfortable in the hand but also showed a handmade feel.
I glazed the bowl with shino, and then wood-fired for 4 continuous days.
Logs of wood are thrown into the kiln and burnt to create the heat needed to vitrify the clay body. As the wood is burnt ash flys around the kiln falling on the pots. This ash melts and creates a glaze. The process is wonderful and can produce very unique effects.
Wood-firing is intense and time-consuming. Pots quite often get destroyed as the ash can run and then stick the ware to the kiln shelf. The foot rings are often beat up a little.
Those that make it are quite lucky. I feel wood-fired pots are always precious and should be cherished.
Be the owner of a handmade tea bowl made on the beautiful of Taiwan.
